Opoho, Dunedin, New Zealand

Welcome to my site, dedicated to providing live weather monitoring and a little weather knowledge. To give you a little background, I sort of discovered that I was fascinated with the weather a few years after I moved from my home town of Oamaru, to Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the South. Dunedin is suitated 170.50E / 45.87S and has a temperate climate which is mainly mild and moist. Average Summer temperatures range from 15C (59F) to 27C (80F), with the odd scorcher (for us) that climbs into the 30's. Winter ranges from around 2C (34F) to 15C (59F), with the odd temperature in the minus. Dunedin each winter receives about 3 to 10 days with snow flurries somewhere in the city and a couple of snow falls that shut down the hill suburbs for at least the morning if not the day. I've been here now 14 years and I'm still waiting for the Big Dump. My home is at an altitude of just over 200m (656 ft) above sea level which is about the snow-line for Dunedin City. Though overall the weather in New Zealand is a little on the dull side. Now don't get me wrong a twister bearing straight down on some poor "War addict" American's trailer home is no joke but also is what keeps me going. This twister was photographed heading through the backyards of Christchurch late 2002. I think someone lost some washing off the line and a guy's outdoor furniture was blown across his lawn.

On this page you will find Live Data displayed from my Weather station which is on and around my house. I use a WM-918 Weather Station made by Oregon Scientific, run the data to my PC and lastly through Andy Keir FreeWX program. This then uploads here to this page to give you current Temperate, Humidity, Wind Speed readings, to name a few. I've also included a map so you can get a rough idea of where I am in the world.

We all like to "see" the weather, so on the Live Cam page you will see the latest image uploaded courtesy of my Logitech Pro 4000 webcam. I use a program called Kabcam mainly for it's archiving image capabilities. Not only do you see the latest uploaded picture, you can also browse an archive of previous pictures to help you track the ever changing weather. This software does come with a price though, unlike Andy Keir FreeWX program, Vidcap which you can download for free. Vidcap is a very adequate program but like most programs for uploading images, it only allows you to send one image which it overlays each time. But it is free.

On the Additional Data page you will find information like Cloud Height, the last 24hrs and Extremes for the year. The Photo Gallery has a collection of weather related pictures I have taken.

So enjoy. Have a look. Touch if you like. Or simpler still, email me if you have a questions or comments.
